Outdoor Track & Field Information

The Outdoor Track & Field Season is finally beginning! Here's information regarding the beginning of our season:

Mandatory Practice Information

  • We will begin practice Monday, February 21, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the stadium. There is no school that day after a long weekend, so practice will not OFFICIALLY be mandatory until after school Tuesday, February 22nd. Practice will begin promptly at 3:15 P.M. every school day, so be ready and on the field then.
  • If you are not still competing for an Avon Lake High School winter sport you will be expected to be at practice every day. If you must miss practice, you must notify Coach Rocco AND your event coach ahead of time with your excuse. I will send out more detailed information about our attendance policy.
  • The boys' locker room is underneath the stadium on the west side of the home stands. Restrooms are available under the stadium as well. We have space to change in our locker room outside. We are not cleared to use the locker rooms inside the school building as those are reserved for other sports teams. Also, do not leave your valuables in the building or unlocked. You should always bring a combination lock to secure your valuables in a locker.
  • Please bring clothes for outdoor each day and indoor if the weather does not permit outside practice. Be prepared to be outside every day (we’ll almost always be outside). For inside practice, we will be incorporating lifting two days of the week throughout the season thanks to the trainers from T3. Groups will be divided into Monday-Wednesday and Tuesday-Thursday lifting groups throughout February and March practices.
  • These sessions will be a part of mandatory practice and follow two shorter track workouts per week. If you are participating in other private training throughout the season (especially at T3) this could substitute for some of that extra time and expense. Ask your coaching staff if you have questions.
  • Practice will end between 4:30 – 5:00 p.m. (depending on your event and the workout for the day). We will do our best to share approximate times at the beginning of each week.
  • For those of you participating in other sports for ALHS in the fall and winter, this is spring season, which means Track & Field should be your priority. Meetings and other obligations you have for these sports should not interfere with our schedule. Not all other coaches get that memo at times, so make sure you let Coach Rocco know of any conflicts should they arise.
  • More importantly, I and your other coaches don't want you to injure yourself by overuse. The rest interval is essential to successful training and if you are not getting proper rest, you will not see the gains you could make as an athlete by following our schedule. Your off-season high school coaches should be made aware that you are participating in track and they should NOT ask that you complete other training (be it running or lifting/strength -- non-strenuous skill work is okay most of the time) that may also fit into your schedule. You will get plenty of training beneficial to you for Track & Field as well as your other sports just by being a part of our team. If you have questions or issues, please communicate them to me as soon as possible.
Saturday Practice
Depending on your event, you may be asked to attend practices on Saturday or Sunday on occasion depending on your availability. Information about those sessions will be sent by event coaches as it comes up.

Throwers
Your practice times will be a little different! Coach Johnson and D’Andrea will let you know where to be on what days and times. We would like you to attend our team meeting at 3:15 p.m. as much as possible for announcements and team acknowledgments.

Pole-Vaulters
You are also sprinters/jumpers, so you are expected to be at team meetings daily and participate in sprinter/jumper workouts unless notified by Coach Arra or Rocco. Occasionally, workouts will be modified to accommodate the more time this particular event takes to train and master. If you have a question, you should ask Coach Rocco.

Paperwork Information
  • All athletes will be required to have a Sports Physical on file in the Athletic Department office PRIOR to being allowed to participate in practice.
  • If you do NOT have an up-to-date physical on file with the athletic department, you will have to report to your event coach, get an alternative workout to do on your own, and then complete your workout outside of the ALHS Track. If you do not have required paperwork, you are still expected to be at the team meeting every day.
  • Once you have your physical completed and and on file with the school you will be permitted to practice with the team.
  • We will access your Emergency Medical Form information through PowerSchool, and along with the Physical, your parent/guardian must also digitally acknowledge that he or she has read and understands the ALHS Athletic Code, eligibility requirements, and concussion protocol. This can be done online -- along with finding a printable copy of the physical form -- if you follow this link:

Parent Meeting
We are still awaiting information regarding a parent meeting for Track & Field. When we know, I will share that information with you. This meeting will take place remotely.

Remind.com and email Information
  • Athletes, be sure to follow Coach Arra, Coach Rocco, or Coach Johnson Remind.com where we will send mass texts on an almost-daily basis regarding daily workouts, meet reminders, and other track-related items.
  • To join that list text the message: @altrack22 to the phone number: 81010.
  • This communication is meant for athletes, parent information will be updated on our track blog: http://alhstrackandfield.blogspot.com/
